Christmas Class with Rachel Lovegrove

  • A pre-Christmas extended class for the winter months when the immune system is often compromised and stress levels are high! For yoga enthusiasts with at least 6 months regular yoga practice. If you have your own kit, please bring it. Rachel will provide extras but bring your own mat.

  • Complimentary coffee, tea, & biscuits will be available but you may want to bring a light lunch.

  • Rachel has been teaching yoga since 1998 and began her practice earnestly in 1991 in Winchester when she discovered Iyengar Yoga which she felt was the “spiritual discipline” that she had been searching for. She trained with senior teachers in the UK and from abroad and goes regularly to Pune, India, to study with the Iyengar family and further her skills. She has completed several higher level trainings including a three year Iyengar yoga therapeutics program in the USA. She currently lives and teaches in Southampton.

Purely Pranayama with Elaine Rees

Pranayama generally means "control of the breath.” We begin with restorative asanas to help prepare the body, breath and mind better for pranayama practice. Then we observe and explore the control of our breath and energy (‘prana’).

It can have a deep and powerful effect on our mind, body and spirit.  You may find you have more energy or relax more deeply.  It can help to lower blood pressure, clear sinuses and improve our breathing. We may find we can manage life stresses better, promote our bodies own healing and have a stronger sense of wellbeing.

I'll draw upon the direct teaching I have had from Geeta Iyengar in India, senior teachers and from BKS Iyengar's book Light on Pranayama.  I'm pleased to say that our UK Convention this year is dedicated to Pranayama and a guest teacher is coming from India.  I was lucky enough to be taught by her in Pune in 2013 and will do my best to share her teachings with you.

Ideally, you have had 1-2 years of regular Iyengar Yoga practice and feel free to chat to me for advice.

Dress Code: colours of the rainbow

“Each asana has a beautiful shape, grace and elegance that bestows power and makes the practitioner as strong as a DIAMOND and at the same time as soft as a FLOWER” BKS Iyengar

Diamonds and flowers will be our theme and we’ll take inspiration directly from our visits to India and lessons taught by Guruji himself.  Just as a diamond reflects light and flowers come in many bright colours, we ask you to wear ‘the colours of the rainbow’ to the event this year.

So, come prepared to have fun, practice with us and listen to more tales of our experiences at the RIMYI Institute in celebration!

Free Event - National Iyengar Yoga Day

  • St. Catherines Hill Community House (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In 19 January 1975, BKS Iyengar opened up RIMYI, his school in Pune, India.  To celebrate this, his method of teaching and to bring us together as a local Iyengar yoga community, 14 January has been designated UK National Iyengar Yoga Day!  This is a free event and you’re invited to make a donation towards Mr Iyengar’s home village in India (Bellur) where education, sanitation and health is being improved.

There will be two teachers – Elaine Rees and Zoe Hobbs - and we’ll offer an energising class for an hour followed by another 30 minutes of restorative poses.  All this rounded off with tea and home-made cakes donated by students!

As well as having fun together, we aim to include some interesting facts and tales of our experiences at the RIMYI Institute in celebration!

As we are in frosty winter and the RIMYI sign is black lettering on white marble, we’d like you to wear BLACK and WHITE!!

To book: email Elaine Rees at elainerees@europe.com and include your full name and contact telephone number (mobile if possible).  Advance booking is essential!  We’ll send confirmation upon receipt of your email.
