Pranayama generally means "control of the breath.” We begin with restorative asanas to help prepare the body, breath and mind better for pranayama practice. Then we observe and explore the control of our breath and energy (‘prana’).
It can have a deep and powerful effect on our mind, body and spirit. You may find you have more energy or relax more deeply. It can help to lower blood pressure, clear sinuses and improve our breathing. We may find we can manage life stresses better, promote our bodies own healing and have a stronger sense of wellbeing.
I'll draw upon the direct teaching I have had from Geeta Iyengar in India, senior teachers and from BKS Iyengar's book Light on Pranayama. I'm pleased to say that our UK Convention this year is dedicated to Pranayama and a guest teacher is coming from India. I was lucky enough to be taught by her in Pune in 2013 and will do my best to share her teachings with you.
Ideally, you have had 1-2 years of regular Iyengar Yoga practice and feel free to chat to me for advice.
